DOWFLAKE® Xtra is a premium calcium chloride flake with an active ingredient content of 83–87 % CaCl₂. It’s white, odorless, free-flowing flakes that meet or exceed ASTM D98 and AASHTO M144 purity standards for Type S, Grade 3, Class B calcium chloride. Because of its higher purity, DOWFLAKE Xtra allows a lower application rate compared to conventional 77–80 % calcium chloride flakes. The flakes release heat during dissolution, helping to melt ice and snow more aggressively and over a wider temperature range than many alternatives. Performance depends on surface conditions, temperature, ice thickness, etc. In unpaved surfaces, it acts as a dust control agent by drawing moisture from the air (hygroscopic behavior) to keep surfaces damp and bind dust particles.
In concrete work, adding DOWFLAKE Xtra as an admixture accelerates both initial and final setting times and boosts early strength, especially useful in cold weather pours. It also mixes well with rock salt, sand, or gravel to enhance those materials’ performance. Storage and shelf life matter. DOWFLAKE Xtra is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) and deliquescent (can turn into brine when overexposed to humidity). To preserve quality, store dry, sealed, and shielded from moisture. Safety matters: it causes eye and skin irritation on contact, and heat builds when mixing with water, so add slowly with stirring.
